Out of the blue in the Washington Post today, former US Ambassador to the UN and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young decries America's "excessive Puritanism" and makes a plea to give the beleaguered World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz just one more chance.

One can almost imagine Young on the verge of breaking into tears as he grovels for one of the master architects of the Iraq War.

Andrew Young has done many distinguished things in his life, and I don't want to take anything from him on those fronts. But seriously, Ambassador Young has some chutzpah to counsel the rest of America on what lines should and should not be crossed -- and what should be forgiven and not in our public leaders.

One reader remarked to me this morning that "Andrew Young never saw a well-financed cause he did not love."

Question? Bernie your book, the If Holden Caulfield Were In My Classroom is based on your 40 years of experience as an educator in South Carloina, but is structured as if it takes place over one school year. Are the characters based on particular students you taught, or are they fictional composites? In other words, do you expect any of your past students to recognize themselves in these pages?

Well, the answer Theyre pretty much composites for disguise as much as effect. Some will recognize themselves (particularly those whose stories are represented), at least until they turn into someone else, some may not recognize themselves, and some will think they do who wont. Many, I think, will partially recognize themselves. The books meant to be a celebration of them. So if they see themselves in it, whether or not its literally them, all the better; metaphorically, hopefully its all of them. Wouldnt want to leave anyone out.

More importantly, with or without this book, they know who they are, though a few early readers (check Vlaimir Kleymans customer review on Amazon.Com) have suggested If Holden is a healthy reminder.

Schein holds a Master of Education degree from Harvard University, with an emphasis in educational psychology. His stories and essays have been published in Atlanta Magazine, Atlanta Weekly, Creative Loafing, and the Mississippi Educational Advance. His previous book (co-authored with his wife, Martha Schein), Open Classrooms in the Middle School, was a featured selection of the Educators Book Club. Bernie Schein lives in Beaufort, SC, near Charleston.

Myths abound: they wont open up; not true, theyre dying to. They want to separate from their parents; not true, they crave intimacy with them. They are close only with their friends; not true, theyre too busy trying to out-do and impress them. This is the creative process, the stuff of art Has exuberantly blazed new trails in education.

In his over 40 years as an educator, Bernie Schein has gotten personal with countless students, bucking the conventional wisdom that education must be impersonal, formal, and objective. In countless talks and workshops, he has shared his views on everything from the shortcomings of the SAT and No Child Left Behind to the need for students to be emotionally open and aware before true learning can take place.

Schein was the principal of three different schools in Mississippi and South Carolina before he taught full time at the Paideia School in Atlanta, which he helped to start. The subjects he taught included creative and expository writing, literature, drama, and social studies, where his approach was distinguished by its group dynamics and his unique class government and court system. He has been an educational consultant throughout his career and continues to teach creative writing to both adolescents and adults. He was chosen District Teacher of the Year in the Atlanta, Georgia area in 1978.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18, 2009 In a sermon today at Howard University's chapel in Washington, Wright used Obama's life as an example to show how despite challenges as a nation, the country can build a better future.

"He was able to do what nobody of African decent was ever able to do in the 211-year history of this country. ... The Lord stepped into his story and gave him a new attitude," he said.

It was a completely different scene from Wright's defiant appearance at the National Press Club in April. Gone was any hint of anger directed at Obama for denouncing his more controversial sermons and statements, which became fodder for Obama's critics during the presidential campaign.

As we move into the 21st Century, the era of human compassion calls for a new kind of leadership. Our current neighborhood, community and faith leaders continue to be committed, but do not have the capacity to participate in the Public Policy Process. The Public Policy Leader of this new era must be equally as committed in the quest for new approaches to citizen participation.Wed like to declare the kind of leaders and social stakeholders as the foundation of an Independent Movement.

U.S. Supreme Court grants reprieve to Troy Davis (posted 23 September 2008)

The United States Supreme Court has issued a stay of execution to stop, at least for the time being, the State-mandated murder of Troy Davis.

The State of Georgia was planning to murder Troy Davis about an hour ago. They were planning to do so even though his conviction was based entirely on the testimony of nine eye-witnesses, seven of whom have since recanted their testimony and claimed that they were intimidated into giving false testimony by threats from the cops. Neither physical evidence nor a murder weapon was ever produced by the police. But the Georgia Board of Paroles and Pardons refused to give Davis a new evidentiary hearing, to investigate whether or not this man was about to be murdered based on nothing but lies, because a mans life means nothing next to the importance of finality in the States criminal system. Yesterday the Georgia Supreme Court refused to stay the execution because, in their view, U.S. Supreme Court properly has jurisdiction over Davis pending petition, and a mans life means nothing next to the importance of due deference to another judges turf. Never mind that, under normal circumstances, the U.S. Supreme Court would not even have been ready to hear Troy Daviss plea for a new evidentiary hearing until after the State of Georgia killed Davis. Thankfully, after agreeing to an emergency hearing, the Supreme Court did the right thing and put a halt to the killing, at least until after Daviss petition can be heard.

JACKSON, Georgia (CNN) The U.S. Supreme Court granted a last-minute reprieve to a Georgia man fewer than two hours before he was to be executed for the 1989 slaying of an off-duty police officer. Troy Anthony Davis, 39, has his execution stayed by the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Troy Anthony Davis learned that his execution had been stayed when he saw it on television, he told CNN via telephone in his first interview after the stay was announced.
He said he was thankful to God for the news that came during an emergency session the U.S. Supreme Court convened.
Davis said everyone should pray for the slain officers family.
The 39-year-old also said that he is very grateful for everything that everyone is doing for him and that he would accept whatever decision the Supreme Court rendered in the coming days about his case.
At the Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, a crowd of Davis supporters, led by the Rev. Al Sharpton, erupted in cheers when Sharpton announced the stay. Some shouted Hallelujah!

U.S. Supreme Court Clarence Thomas, Associate Justice, was born in the Pin Point community of Georgia near Savannah June 23, 1948. He married Virginia Lamp in 1987 and has one child, JamalAdeen, by a previous marriage. He attended Conception Seminary and received an A.B., cum laude, from Holy Cross College, and a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1974. He was admitted to law practice in Missouri in 1974, and served as an Assistant Attorney General of Missouri from 19741977, an attorney with the Monsanto Company from 19771979, and Legislative Assistant to Senator John Danforth from 19791981. From 19811982, he served as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, and as Chairman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 19821990. He became a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuitin 1990. President Bush nominated him as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, and he took his seat October 23, 1991.
